SOD:
How often should you water?
As a general rule, keep sod and soil moist all throughout the day. As much as 2 to 6 sprinklings during the day (morning and afternoon) are required until sod begins to root. Adjust for location, sprinklers, and temperature. Stay off new sod until after the first mowing.
How long does new turf take to root?
Turf roots can take up to 6 weeks to develop a strong root system. It takes around 2 weeks for the shallow root system to form. This means that you need to stay off the grass during this time to give it enough time to form its root system. You will need to give the turf at least 6 weeks to grow before the first frost.
Can you water new sod too much?
New sod does need to be watered more often than established grass to ensure that it will take root, but it is possible to put too much water on the sod. Too much water on your sod could make it soggy, which prevents it from establishing a strong root system.
What should you not do with new sod?
Take care not to walk or run on new sod, as this can prevent the fragile young roots from developing properly. If you have pets, try to prevent as much contact with the newly installed sod as possible.
How do I know if I over watered my new sod?
One way to tell if your sod is being over watered is to check the bottom of the soil a few minutes after watering. If the soil under the sod is still soggy five minutes after your watering session has ended, chances are you are over watering your new sod.
Is it normal for new sod to yellow?
If you fail to give the sod enough water or fail to water it often after installation, or leave it to dry while it's in the waiting for installation, yellowing is a common sight. Whenever this happens, just stop and water the new or freshly laid sod after few pieces so it doesn't dry.
How long after laying sod should you fertilize?
Fertilize new sod for the first time about six weeks after laying the sod. Apply fertilizer as recommended by the results of a soil test or broadcast a slow-release, granular fertilizer with a 10-10-10 or similar formula at a rate of no more than 1 pound nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn.
PLANTS:
New installation watering: After installation, all shrubs and evergreens should be watered daily 3 times a day for the first week. If your lawn sprinklers are reaching your shrubbery with water you can use that a single watering time. When watering by hand, run water at the regular pressure for approximately 15-30 seconds per plant. During hot weather, additional watering may be needed.
In the instance where trees are planted in the lawn, they should NOT be watered if new sod has been planted. Trees planted in an established lawn should, however, be watered 3 times per week. Trees planted in a landscape bed should be watered the same as your shrubs and evergreens.
Ground-cover should be watered every other day until they are established. They will need watering every day during hot weather.
Established plants: All shrubs should be watered 1-2 times per week, depending on the weather. Trees do not require more watering, except in drought conditions where there is less than 1 inch of rain per week. Ground-cover, however, should be watered 3 times per week for 3 months.
Fertilizing: We recommend you fertilize all your shrubs, evergreens, trees, ground-cover, and perennials once every 3 weeks. This should be done during the months of April, May, June, July, and August. We suggest you use Miracle-Gro, a water-soluble fertilizer, or Milorganite, a granular fertilizer.
Pruning: All your shrubs and evergreens can be pruned after 6 months of installation. Additional pruning to shape and size your plants can be done as needed.
